Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Cushion

Amid the sheet masks, BB creams and eye masks, here is another welcome Asian Beauty inspired product, this time by Lancôme. Foundation cushions are HUGE in Asia, they come at many different price points and do different things, but at the heart of cushions is a lightweight liquid foundation housed in a compact. Far from the days of heavy creams, compacts have come a long way and these cushions provide light, natural coverage in a nifty on-the-go package. Thanks to Lancôme, we now get that convenience here in South Africa too, in their refillable Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Cushion.

Lancôme’s cushion is a near-patented cushion whose fibres give the liquid more room and aids in preservation of the product. The sponge also features a specific mesh that filters through just the right amount of product. And you must be wondering, but the foundation compact is none other than Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra foundation. Which is smashing.

So how does it actually fare?

I used the applicator sponge that comes with the foundation, and while it is a struggle to pat, pat and pat, it definitely blends to a really, natural look. Far more natural than most foundations I’ve used. Coverage is light-medium on me and good enough to skip concealer if I’m just wearing this to work. But be aware, that I’ve been using a really light hand to pick up foundation because the shade doesn’t match 100% and you can control how much you pick up with the sponge. You can probably get a little more coverage if you apply with a heavier hand.

Shade selection is a problem. I was sent shade 05 and shade 06 and as you can see below there is a HUGE gap between these two shades and nothing in between. There are seven shades in total, with 06 being eh darkest and 015 being the lightest.  My guess is you’re going to have more luck finding your shade if you’re light-skinned. Shade 05 is a tad too pink for my skin but I’ve had success mixing it with 06 and being able to wear that out without anyone noticing. It’s really such a pity that the shade selection is not the best for some of us because this formula is fantastic.

The Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Cushion costs R400 and refills are R350.

UPDATE: I’ve just heard from the brand and we’ll have the rest of the shades in the fourth quarter of this year and we’ll have all the shades that the US has. So for those of you who can’t find a shade, don’t worry, there’ll be much more soon.

I went out to buy this and ended up not getting it because of the shade selection. Ended up getting the Dior cushion instead which works pretty much the same but at least I found a shade match

Yeah it really is a pity! Are you enjoying the Dior cushion?

I really, really wanted to buy this. Went to the shops with no makeup after asking my Lancôme consultant when she was available and the colours didn’t work for me. I was so disappointed. When I saw the reviews online I saw that the US gets 15 shades, while we get the measly 6. 5 could have worked for me if it were yellow or neutral toned and not pink.

I know it is a pity! I’ve just heard from the brand and we will be getting the full US shade selection in the fourth quarter of this year.
